The Seattle Seahawks have hired Carl Smith to be the team’s quarterback coach, a team spokesman confirmed Thursday night, reuniting Smith and Pete Carroll on a coaching staff for the fifth time.
Smith coached under Pete Carroll in New England from 1997-1999, then at USC in 2004 and briefly in 2009. They were also both assistants at North Carolina State in 1982. Smith, 62, most recently served as the quarterbacks coach in Cleveland. After his first stint at USC, Smith became the offensive coordinator of the Jacksonville Jaguars from 2005-2006. He also served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in New Orleans from 1986-1996.
Smith replaces Jedd Fisch, who left after one season in Seattle to become the offensive coordinator at the University of Miami.
