Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll addressed the media at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center on Monday.
The biggest news regarded injured receiver Tyler Lockett. It turns out Lockett suffered both a broken tibia and fibula in his right leg during Saturday’s 34-31 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. Lockett suffered the injury late in the second quarter while catching what appeared to be a 29-yard touchdown pass from Russell Wilson, as his right leg got caught under Arizona cornerback Brandon Williams. Following a video review it was ruled that Lockett was down inside the 1-yard line, taking the touchdown away to add insult to injury.
Lockett underwent surgery late Saturday night to repair the breaks, and there had to be precautions taken against infection as bone pierced skin when the injury happened. Lockett will remain in the hospital one more night, then will be off his feet for four-to-six weeks. Carroll said Lockett should have a full recovery and be back in time for training camp next year.
Losing Lockett is a significant blow for the Seahawks, as he was not only the team’s best big-play receiver, he was also the team’s return man. Carroll said Paul Richardson will be asked to take on some of Lockett’s role, and that the team will make a roster move to address the situation at receiver, though he didn’t say what that move would be. Carroll also said Richardson and recently-signed running back J.D. McKissic would take over returning duties.
The other significant Seahawks player who left Saturday’s game injured and did not return was running back Thomas Rawls, who departed with a bruised shoulder. Carroll said the severity of Rawls’ injury is not yet known — Rawls underwent an MRI on Monday afternoon and the results weren’t available yet. However, Carroll said Rawls was feeling good, adding that he thought Rawls would be able to play in next Sunday’s season finale against the San Francisco 49ers at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.
Two defensive starters left the game Saturday’s game but returned, those being strong safety Kam Chancellor (ankle) and defensive tackle Ahtyba Rubin (wrist). Carroll said both should be OK for next week’s game.
