Second-half burst boosts Oak Harbor

MARYSVILLE – Oak Harbor scored 20 unanswered points in the second half Friday, rallying to a 33-14 Western Conference North win over Marysville-Pilchuck that upped the Wildcats’ record to 3-1 in league play.

Blake Ward scored two of his three touchdowns in the first half to keep the Wildcats on pace with the Tomahawks at halftime.

Then Oak Harbor’s defense and ball control offense took over, grinding out a win that put it within a half game of league leaders Snohomish and Lake Stevens.

Ward rushed for 98 yards and Nate Metcalf crossed the century mark in yardage, 51 rushing, 50 receiving.

The Wildcats totaled 346 yards of total offense to M-P’s 201.

M-P running back Ken Kam finished the game with 131 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a 75-yard touchdown run that opened the scoring.

Arlington 20, Mount Vernon 15: Quarterback Kenny Gunter capped a 90-yard fourth-quarter drive with a 1-yard touchdown run to lift Arlington from a 15-14 deficit with four minutes left in the Wesco North game. The Eagles improved to 2-2 in division play. Gunter also threw a 35-yard touchdown strike to running back Brenton Bodewig to give Arlington a 14-7 lead at halftime. Bodewig rushed for 104 yards on 19 carries.

Edmonds-Woodway 40, Shorecrest 23: Running back Glenn Gallagher rushed for 251 yards, scored four second-half touchdowns and kicked four extra points as Edmonds-Woodway won its first game of the season.

The Warriors (1-3 Western Conference, 1-4 overall) outscored Shorecrest 19-0 in the fourth quarter to overcome a two-point deficit after three quarters of the Wesco South game.

Gallagher scored on runs of 5, 18 and 47 yards, plus a 43-yard pass from quarterback Reed Brown. Brown also threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Andrew Vaabeene for Edmonds-Woodway’s first touchdown.

Shorecrest (0-4, 1-4) scored on its first play, when quarterback Jon Glancy passed to Shane Hoffman for a 55-yard touchdown and a 7-0 lead after Elliot Richards’ extra point.

Edmonds-Woodway scored twice in the first quarter on Brown’s touchdown pass to Vaabeene and defensive lineman Michael Lee’s fumble recovery in the end zone to take a 14-7 lead.

Shorecrest made it 14-13 when Jesse Hoffman ran 2 yards for a touchdown to end an 11-play drive, then took advantage of a short Edmonds-Woodway punt just before halftime to take a 16-14 lead. Richards kicked a 31-yard field goal with two seconds remaining.

Shorecrest led 23-14 early in the third quarter when Glancy threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to J.D. Gardner.

Edmonds-Woodway scored the next four touchdowns, all by Gallagher, to wipe out the lead and pull away in the fourth quarter.
