Shenton hits grand slam, AquaSox beat Spokane in series finale

Bellingham native Austin Shenton drives in 5 runs to lead Everett to an 11-6 win over the Indians.

SPOKANE — Bellingham native Austin Shenton hit a grand slam, doubled twice and drove in five runs to lead the Everett AquaSox to an 11-6 win over the Spokane Indians in Sunday evening’s series finale.

The AquaSox (12-6) scored four runs apiece in the fifth and seventh innings to surge in front and post their fifth double-digit run total of the young season.

After Everett opened the fifth by drawing three consecutive walks, Julio Rodriguez scored on a wild pitch. Jack Larsen then followed with a two-run double and David Sheaffer added a run-scoring double later in the inning to give the AquaSox a 7-5 lead.

Spokane (6-12) trimmed the deficit with a run in the sixth, but Shenton blasted a grand slam over the right-field fence in the seventh to stretch Everett’s lead to 11-6.

Shenton, a Bellingham High School alum, finished 3-for-5 with three extra-base hits and extended his hitting streak to seven games. Zach DeLoach also homered for the AquaSox. Larsen, Sheaffer and Kaden Polcovich each finished with two hits.

Isaiah Campbell, a 2019 second-round draft pick, pitched 5 2/3 innings in relief for Everett. He allowed one run and two hits, while striking out four batters and walking one.

Spokane won four of six games in the series. The AquaSox entered Spokane with an eight-game win streak, but lost the first three games of the series before taking two of the last three.

Next up for Everett is a six-game road series against the Vancouver Canadians that runs Tuesday through Sunday in Hillsboro, Oregon.
