Shorecrest’s Farquhar qualifies for state in high jump

BELLINGHAM – After the first day of state qualifying Wednesday at Civic Field, Shorecrest stood strong among the Northwest District 3A teams with individuals headed toward the championship.

The Shorecrest girls team scored 23 points, and currently occupies third place behind Ferndale (36.5 points) and Sehome (28). The top-three individual placers qualify for state.

Shorecrest’s Amy Farquhar placed third in the high jump with a 5-foot leap to send her to state behind Ferndale’s Meghan Dahl and Kimmie Halwachs.

Farquhar was joined by teammate Becky Scherer, whose 120-foot, 6-inch discus throw placed her second to qualify.

Lynnwood finished with eight points, and had no qualifiers as of Wednesday.

On the boys side, Lynnwood had 16 points, Shorecrest 14 and Meadowdale 12, good for fourth, fifth and seventh places, respectively.

Lynnwood’s Parys Fox won the long jump with a leap of 21-7.75, and was followed by Shorecrest’s Shane Hoffman in second with a jump of 21-0.25.

Meadowdale’s Duncan Hendrick qualified in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 23.39 seconds for third place.

The qualifying continues Friday at Civic Field in Bellingham.

North Cascades Conference 2A District One: Meridian’s Evan Needham shot a 156 to claim the medal at the District One 2A championships. Blaine landed the championship with a low of 74. The top seven golfers are headed to state.
