Shorecrest’s Hansen beats Kamiak’s Boyd

LAKEWOOD – The showdown between Kamiak’s Travis Boyd and Shorecrest’s Kevin Hansen disappointed no one.

In fact, the two cross country runners battled to the end until Kevin Hansen (15:39) slowly broke free from the tight bond to claim the Western Conference South Division boys championship Thursday at Lakewood High School’s 3.07-mile course. Boyd finished 7 seconds behind Hansen with a time of 15:46.

On the team front, Evan Wirkkala’s strong third-place finish (16:10) helped the Jackson Timberwolves claim the team championship, slipping past Kamiak 46-58.

“You can’t underestimate the value of team unity,” Wirkkala said. “We are a family. When you hang out and train with the same group of guys, you become tight. And it shows in our performances.”

Three Jackson runners finished within 3 seconds of each other. Corey Nuro (16:31), Caleb Knox (16:33) and Brandon Renfrow (16:34) finished 9th, 10th and 11th respectively.

Kamiak’s Evan Garrett (16:21) finished fifth.

Shorecrest (62) took third place, Edmonds-Woodway (112) finished fourth and Meadowdale (135) finished fifth.
