Shoreline Christian girls advaces to semi-finals

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE -Shoreline Christian forced 27 turnovers, 18 in the first half, to defeat Seattle Lutheran 47-27 Friday night at Snohomish County Christian and advance to the semifinals of the B tri-district tournament.

“We played a very respectable (Seattle Lutheran) team,” said Crusader coach Stan DeYager. “We knew we’d have to be at the top of our defensive game, and we brought it.”

Sophomore forward Julia De Koekkoek scored a game-high 21 points on 8-for-11 shooting. She scored 10 of those points in the first half, during which, as De Yager put it, “the tone was definitely set.”

De Koekkoek’s line also included eight rebounds and six steals.

“Julia just plays on all-around floor game,” said De Yager.

The Crusaders play King’s West at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Chief Leschi in Puyallup.

In other quarterfinal games, Evergreen Lutheran defeated Snohomish County Christian 61-47, Clallam Bay beat Mount Vernon Christian 55-33 and King’s West downed Darrington 55-39.

Ferndale 64, Lynnwood 63 OT: Ferndale scored the game-winning basket with 2.7 seconds remaining in overtime, negating a 30-point performance by Lynnwood’s Nathan Rudd in the 3A District 1 consolation game. Shorecrest was also eliminated after losing 71-49 to Bellingham.

King’s West 61, Darrington 50: Darrington dropped into the losers’ bracket of the B tri-district tournament despite Kris Reece’s game-high, 21-point effort. The Loggers play Tacoma Baptist in a loser-out game at 1:30 p.m. today at Chief Leschi.

In other quarterfinal games, Clalklam Bay beat Tacoma Baptist 82-52, Neah Bay beat Mount Vernon Christian 52-48 and Shoreline Christian beat Evergreen Lutheran 50-41.

Eric Dodd and Jacob Groen combined for 13 rebounds. Shoreline Christian meets Neah Bay in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Chief Leschi.

4A District 1 boys basketball playoffs: Cascade is the Wesco North’s fourth seed and plays at Mountlake Terrace in Tuesday’s opening round. Mount Vernon is the third seed and plays at Shorewood. Their seeds were reversed in information received from the district Thursday.
