Shorewood captures South title

MUKILTEO – After five years the Wesco South finally has a new champion.

The Shorewood Thunderbirds dethroned the Kamiak Knights Thursday in the final meet of the season with a 94-92 win, giving the Thunderbirds the Wesco South championship.

Kamiak had won the Wesco South title every year beginning with 2001.

“They out depth us,” Kamiak coach Chris Erickson said.

Kamiak won the final race of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, but Shorewood finished second and third, to hold onto its lead.

The Thunderbirds led by 10 points heading into the backstroke, but a Kamiak win in the breaststroke cut Shorewood’s lead to four heading into the final race.

“It was a wake-up call before the districts,” Erickson said.

Seniors Taryn VanGerpen and Lara Sreibers each won two races and swam on two winning relay teams for the Knights (6-1 division, 7-3 overall).

Shorewood (7-0, 10-2) was led by Laurin Williams wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle events.

The Thunderbirds also showed their depth by finishing 1-2-3 in diving.
