Silvertips beat Bruins for first road victory

CHILLIWACK, B.C. — The Everett Silvertips can take a big sigh of relief. Both of their skids are now over.

Everett ended a five-game losing streak and also earned its first road victory of the season, defeating the Chilliwack Bruins 4-3 Friday night.

Tyler Maxwell had two goals and an assist as Everett (6-4-1-3) won for just the second time in its past 10 games. The Tips also snapped a four-game road losing streak.

Kellan Tochkin and Josh Winquist also scored and Landon Ferraro added two assists for the Tips. Kent Simpson earned the win in goal, making 28 saves.

Everett overage center Clayton Cumiskey returned to the lineup Friday. Cumiskey had been out since Oct. 1 because of a concussion, missing 10 games. He had an assist.

Ryan Howse, Jamie Crooks and Brandon Magee scored for Chilliwack (9-6-0-0), which had won five of its past six. Lucas Gore finished with 26 saves in goal for the Bruins.

The score was tied 2-2 going into the third period, but the Tips quickly grabbed the initiative and scored 2 minutes, 20 seconds in. Good work down low by Cumiskey freed him up for a shot, and after Gore made the save Winquist put in the rebound to give Everett the lead.

The Tips got a vital insurance goal while skating four-on-four at 16:13. Maxwell thought he’d scored his second of the game when he stickhandled past Gore, but the goal wasn’t given. However, moments later Ferraro fed Maxwell, and this time Maxwell buried the puck in the net to make it a two-goal game.

Chilliwack pushed hard after that, pulling Gore for an extra attacker shortly after Maxwell’s goal. But the Bruins couldn’t beat Simpson until Magee scored on a rebound with 1.7 seconds remaining, and by that point it was academic.
