Silvertips can’t overcome early deficit, lose to Americans

Everett falls behind by four goals early and falls 6-2, delaying a chance to clinch a postseason berth.

KENNEWICK — The Everett Silvertips fell in a huge hole early and lost to Tri-City 6-2 on Wednesday night, dropping two points behind the American in their race for fourth place in the Western Conference and delaying a chance to clinch a postseason berth.

First-period goals from Adam Mechura, Jalen Luypen and Deagan McMillan, and a goal in the second from Jordan Gavin, staked the Americans to a 4-0 lead that proved to large for the Silvertips to overcome.

Kyan Grouette scored late in the second and Ben Hemmerling added a goal in the third period for Everett (27-23-2-1, 57 points), which dropped its third straight game. Tyler Palmer made three saves on six shots before being lifted in the first period for Tim Metzger, who made 22 saves on 25 shots the rest of the way.

Luypen and Mechura each added a second goal in the game in the third, and Tomas Suchanek made 32 saves for Tri-City (26-21-5-2, 59 points).
