SPOKANE — The Everett Silvertips were seconds away from forcing overtime.
Instead, Hudson Elynuik scored the game-winning goal with less than four seconds to play to give the Spokane Chiefs a 5-4 victory Wednesday at Spokane Arena.
Elynuik’s goal capped a wild third period that featured a combined five goals after both teams entered the frame tied 2-2. It also spoiled Everett forward Connor Dewar’s first career WHL hat trick.
The U.S. Division-leading Chiefs improved to 4-1. Everett (2-3) lost its second straight.
Dewar’s third goal of the game 54 seconds into the third period gave Everett a 3-2 lead and Dewar his first career hat trick.
Spokane scored back-to-back goals from Taylor Ross and Tyson Helgesen, but Riley Sutter answered for Everett to knot the game 4-4.
That set the stage for Elynuik’s game-winner.
The Chiefs took a 2-0 lead into the second period. But Dewar drew the Tips within one when he scored on Everett’s second power play of the game at 4:02 in the second.
Dewar drew the Tips even on another power play with less than a minute to go in the second. He positioned himself at the net and stuffed it past Dawson Weatherill to make it 2-2 through two periods.
Spokane took the early lead.
Ethan McIndoe tipped in a shot from Jaret Anderson-Dolan to open the scoring at just 2:32 in the opening period. Anderson-Dolan skated in from the right circle and McIndoe deflected the low shot past Dorrin Luding for a 1-0 Spokane lead.
Jeff Faith took advantage of an Everett turnover less than two minutes later as he deked and scored for a 2-0 Spokane lead at 3:50.
Patrick Bajkov had three assists and Kevin Davis had two assists for Everett.
The Tips play at Calgary on Friday.
