Silvertips hire Tim Fragle as new assistant coach

The 45-year-old joins Steve Hamilton’s staff after five years leading Trail of the BCHL.

EVERETT – The Everett Silvertips made an addition to their coaching staff over the weekend, hiring Tim Fragle as an assistant coach on Friday.

Fragle joins head coach Steve Hamilton’s staff after five years leading the Trail Smoke Eaters of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), where he served as head coach and general manager.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to be joining the Everett Silvertips organization,” Fragle said in the team’s press release. “I’m definitely looking forward to working with the entire staff.”

The hiring comes after the Swift Current Broncos hired former assistant Dean DeSilva as their head coach in early July. DeSilva spent four years as an assistant in Everett, remaining on the staff even after Hamilton took over for his predecessor Dennis Williams.

Fragle, meanwhile, is coming off a 35-15-3-1 campaign with Trail, good enough for the fourth-best record in the BCHL before falling to the Cranbrook Bucks in six games during the first round of the playoffs.

The 45-year-old Edmonton native had a franchise-record 112 wins as the coach of the Smoke Eaters upon his departure. As a player, he spent parts of three seasons with Trail from 1997 to 2000.

Fragle arrives to the WHL with additional coaching experience in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and with Hockey Canada, with whom he won two World Junior-A Championships in 2015 as an assistant and in 2016 as the head coach.

“Tim has a tremendous coaching resume and a proven track record of on-ice success,” Silvertips general manager Mike Fraser said in the team’s statement. “He has developed players everywhere he’s been. He fits in well with our style of play and brings a lot of intangibles with him to Everett.”

Fragle joins a Silvertips coaching staff coming off a Scotty Munro Memorial Trophy-winning campaign, finishing atop the WHL regular season standings before falling to the Portland Winterhawks in the second round of the playoffs.

Everett begins its preseason with a road game against Seattle on Sept. 2 before hosting the WHL’s U.S. Division teams in a three-day preseason roundup from Sept. 5-7. The regular season opens on Sept. 20, when the Silvertips host the Wenatchee Wild at Angel of the Winds Arena.
