EVERETT — Everett Silvertips defenseman Ryan Murray was selected Thursday to represent the WHL in the Subway Super Series, despite currently being out with an ankle injury.
The Super Series features two WHL all-star teams consisting of players eligible to play for Canada in the upcoming World Junior Hockey Championships. Players from the WHL face a touring Russian team, first on Nov. 16 in Regina, Saskatchewan, and then Nov. 17 in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. Canada uses the two-game series as an evaluation tool for choosing its team for World Juniors.
Murray, Everett’s 18-year-old captain, played in the Super Series last year and is considered a strong candidate to make Canada’s team this year. However, Murray suffered a sprained ankle in Everett’s game against Brandon on Oct. 19 and is expected to miss another month. That means it is unlikely Murray, who was selected to play in the Nov. 16 game, will be healthy in time to participate.
Murray, who is bidding to become just the second player in Silvertips history to make Canada’s World Juniors team, is hopeful he’ll be back at full speed by the time Canada holds its tryouts in December. Leland Irving is the only other Everett player to represent Canada in the Wolrd Juniors, serving as the back-up goaltender when Canada won the gold medal in 2007.
