Silvertips open trip east with 1-0 win over Hitmen

Everett goaltender Dorrin Luding saves all 29 shots he faces in a win over Calgary.

CALGARY — No Carter Hart? No problem.

Everett Silvertips goaltender Dorrin Luding saved all 29 shots he faced as the Tips blanked the host Calgary Hitmen 1-0 Friday before 4,982 fans at the Saddledome.

It marked the first career regular-season shutout for Luding. The Richmond, British Columbia, native had a shutout during this year’s preseason action for Everett (3-3-0, six points). Calgary slipped to 1-3-1.

“It’s always nice to rebound and now we have to work on the consistency part as well,” head coach Dennis Williams said. “I thought (Luding) made some big saves for us.”

Kevin Davis broke the scoreless deadlock in the third period with a snap shot from above the right circle to make it 1-0 at 3:03 in the third period. Riley Sutter, playing in his hometown, set up Davis with the assist.

It was the first goal of the season for Davis, Everett’s most experienced defenseman.

Everett finished with a 33-29 shot advantage in the contest. Nick Schneider was the hard-luck loser with 32 saves as Everett snapped a two-game losing streak.

“We had lost a couple of games with not a lot of time left,” Williams said. “This was a big win for our mindset and knowing we can close out a game.”

The game remained scoreless through two periods. Calgary had a 13-10 shot advantage during the frame, but neither team found the net as both squads came up empty on power-play opportunities.

Calgary had defenseman Jake Bean returned from the Carolina Hurricanes earlier this week. Bean played in the game and nearly set up a goal to break a scoreless 0-0 tie halfway through the second period.

Luding survived a second-period collision with teammate Wyatte Wylie. Trainers tended to Luding on the ice and he stayed in the game. Luding had to leave last Saturday’s game after a second-period collision in what was eventually a 5-4 loss at Tri-City.

Everett held a 11-9 shot advantage through the scoreless first period. The Tips had three good looks inside the first 90 seconds. Later in the frame Martin Fasko-Rudas rang a shot off the post, and Schneider robbed Matt Fonteyne near the goal in the last minute of the opening period.

“We had a lot of good chances,” Williams said. “(Schneider) made some great saves. I’m not sure how he made that save on (Fonteyne) there. He definitely kept them in the game.”

Everett finished 0-for-5 on the power play. The Tips killed off both of Calgary’s man advantages.

Everett’s nine-game road trip continues Sunday as the Tips take on the Edmonton Oil Kings. The puck drops at 3 p.m.
