EVERETT — The Everett Silvertips helped bolster their defense for the future, signing defenseman Griffin Foulk to a Western Hockey League education contract Tuesday.
The Tips acquired the rights to Foulk, who will be a 17-year-old next season, last November in the trade that sent Everett’s all-time leading career goal scorer, Tyler Maxwell, to Edmonton. Foulk, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound native of Broomfield, Colo., split his season between the Colorado Thunderbirds U-18 team and the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey League. With Colorado he had one goal and two assists in 23 games, and with Tri-City he had three assists in 29 games.
“We’re very excited that Griffin has committed to playing in the WHL for the Silvertips,” Everett general manager Garry Davidson said in a press release. “He skates very well and can move the puck, and we certainly expect big things out of him the next few years. He’ll be coming in as a 17-year-old with a year of junior-A experience under his belt and should give a boost to our defense corps. We’re glad to have him on board.”
Everett can use the help on defense. It’s possible the Tips will lose their top four defensemen from last season. Everett already acquired 18-year-old defenseman Ben Betker from Portland in a trade for defenseman Seth Jones, and the Tips are hoping to recruit 18-year-old Cornell-bound defenseman Reece Willcox, whose rights also were acquired in the Jones trade.
