Tips add defenseman

The Silvertips beefed up their blue line Monday, adding 6-foot-2, 220-pound defenseman Randy King to their roster. The 17-year-old King, who hails from Salt Lake City, becomes the only American on the team.

King impressed management at Everett’s training camp this summer, was added to the team’s 50-player Protected List, and was a candidate to make the Silvertips’ opening-day roster. However, he decided to return home after attending the first three days of camp.

King began the season with the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League, registering one assist and 25 penalty minutes in seven games. Last season he played 20 games for the Gamblers, with one assist and 60 penalty minutes.

“We are happy to have Randy join our organization,” Everett general manager Doug Soetaert said in a press release. “We feel he will be a big key in our building process with the Everett Silvertips. He is a quality individual and a very competitive young man who will fit in our organization.”

Scouting report: Moose Jaw has laid claim to the title of worst team in the Western Hockey League. Through 19 games, the Warriors have yet to register a victory, which is thought to be a league record for longest winless streak to start a season. They are currently 0-14-4-1 with a four-game losing streak. Everett (9-5-2-2) won the first two games on its five-game, 11-day road trip through the WHL’s East Division,

The Warriors haven’t had trouble scoring goals. Nineteen-year-old right wing Troy Brouwer (10 goals, seven assists) and 18-year-old center Dustin Boyd (six goals, 11 assists) are tied for the team lead in points with 17, and 17-year-old left wing Kenndal McArdle (seven goals, nine assists) is just one point behind.

Where Moose Jaw has struggled is on defense. The Warriors have given up a league-leading 93 goals. The second-worst defensive showing is by Swift Current, which has surrendered 63. Neither 20-year-old Jordan McLaughlin (0-6-3, 3.78 goals-against average, .887 save percentage) nor 17-year-old Joey Perricone (0-6-1, 5.06-goals against average, .866 save percentage) has proven effective in goal.

Around the WHL: After going 2-1 last week, including an impressive 5-2 victory at Saskatoon, Everett moved up one place from eighth to seventh in this week’s Western Major Junior Hockey Writers Association poll. Medicine Hat remained the unanimous No. 1, earning all 15 first-place votes. Saskatoon held on to second, Seattle moved up from fourth to third. … Regina forward Jon Bubnick was named the WHL Player of the Week for Nov. 1-8. Bubnick had five goals and three assists in three games, leading the Pats to a 3-0 record.
