Six squads take aim at soccer state titles

Six local girls soccer teams made it to the prestigious field of 16. Can any of them win four straight games and cap the 2010 season with a state championship?

Here are the first-round matchups, in three different classifications, for the six area squads that advanced to the state tournaments:

Class 4A

*District 1 champion Snohomish (14-5) vs. Curtis (12-2-3) at 7 p.m. tonight at Snohomish High.

*District 1 runnerup Lake Stevens (12-6) vs. Puyallup (8-4-5) at 7 p.m. tonight at Sparks Stadium in Puyallup.

Class 3A

*District 1 champion Meadowdale (14-5) vs. Prairie at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Edmonds Stadium.

*District 1 No. 2 seed Glacier Peak (17-1-1) vs. Seattle Prep (11-1-7) at 7 p.m. tonight at Memorial Stadium in Seattle.

Class 2A

*District 1 champion Archbishop Murphy (17-2) vs. North Kitsap (12-4) at 6 p.m. tonight at Goddard Stadium.

*District 1 runnerup Lakewood (17-1-1) vs. Klahowya (12-1-2) at 6 p.m. tonight at Silverdale Stadium in Silverdale.

Everett School District’s top fall scholar-athletes

The Everett School District’s fall scholar-athlete award winners were announced on Monday. One female athlete and one male athlete from each district high school received the honor. The winners are:

Cascade High

*Vietkhanh Vu, volleyball. Nicknamed VK, she has a 4.0 cumulative grade-point average and is Cascade’s ASB president.

*Andrew Olson, cross country. He has a 3.45 GPA and is Cascade’s ASB vice president.

Everett High

*Lucas Sontra, football. The all-conference gridiron performer is a multi-sport athlete who has a 3.97 GPA.

*Kathryn Stewart, cross country. She takes advanced placement and honors classes, and has volunteered for community-service projects.

Jackson High

*Denae Fitz, soccer. She is a team captain and four-year varsity letterwinner who has a 3.89 GPA and is an active member of National Honor Society and Girls Scouts.

*Sean Roe, cross country. He has been captain of Jackson’s cross country and track teams, has a 3.895 GPA (seven advanced placement classes), and is a member of National Honor Society.

Three locals among state XC coaches of the year

Lakewood High’s Jeff Sowards (2A boys), Stanwood High’s Jordan Sneva (4A girls) and Jackson High’s Eric Hruschka (4A boys) were among those named state cross country coach of the year for their respective classifications. The winners were announced Friday at the Washington State Cross Country Coaches Association meeting in Kennewick.

Winter sports begin soon

Winter sports practices (boys and girls basketball, boys swimming and diving, and boys and girls wrestling) start on Monday. Look for The Herald’s winter sports previews beginning later this month.
