Skaters place fifth at worlds

Team USA members Kylee Berger of Shoreline and Trace Hansen of Mukilteo placed fifth at the 2005 Roller Figure Skating World Championships held Nov. 17-27 in Rome.

Berger and Hansen competed in world class pairs. The two are members of the Everett Expressions Artistic Skating Club.

Berger and Hansen had a solid short program, but a minor error dropped them to sixth place, the Everett club said in a press release. They moved up one spot after the long program.

In the latter, Berger and Hansen attempted to become the first American team to complete a throw triple loop, but narrowly missed landing the throw.

Italian teams captured the first three spots in the competition, with Frederico Degli Esposti and Marika Zanforlin placing first.

Soccer

Kurtz ranked first nationally: A.J. Kurtz of the Colorado Christian University men’s soccer team led all NCAA Division II goalkeepers this season with an average of 8.07 saves per game.

Kurtz, a junior from Everett, made 121 saves in 15 games.

Despite Colorado Christian’s 0-15 record, Kurtz was honored as one of the top three goalkeepers in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

Bowling

Mariner increases its lead: The Mariner Marauders upped their lead over second-place Cascade in the Everett Parks and Recreation Mixed High School Bowling League to 27.5 points last week.

Mariner finished the week with 227.5 points to the Bruins’ 200. Marysville-Pilchuck was third with 178.5.

Chris Kirk of Cascade bowled the top two games of the week (266 and 258). Brandon Cavett of Lake Stevens rolled the high series (725).

Among the girls, Kristen Kelley of Marysville-Pilchuck turned in the top two games (210 and 202) and the high series (587).

Kelley leads the girls with a season average of 168.69. Evelyn Potoczny of Kamiak is second at 157.69. Michael Johnson of Snohomish is tops among the boys with a 215.48 average. Joshua Jackson of Mariner is second at 204.33.
