Snohomish aces division title

LAKE STEVENS – The Snohomish boys tennis team generated another 7-0 victory on Monday.

Sweeps have become commonplace for the Panthers, but with this one, against Lake Stevens, Snohomish (clinched its fourth consecutive Western Conference North Division title.

The significance of winning the meet was initially lost on coach Dick Jansen, whose players informed him of the achievement after the final match ended.

Titles and sweeps are fine, Jansen said, but he enjoys watching his players mature and improve every day; players like Carl Merisko, who won at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 5-0, Monday. Merisko has gone undefeated since losing his first match of the season.

Tyler Stocker and Haiyang Zhang are undefeated in singles matches, and Zach Gordon has only one loss. In doubles, Snohomish’s No. 1 duo, Kelly Helms and Micah Perron, and its No. 2 team, Brendan Lacy and Kaleb Stevens, are also undefeated.

Most important, the players are friends on and off the court, Jansen said. “Their philosophy is ‘Leave no man behind.’ They get behind each other and coach each other.”

Oak Harbor 5, Mount Vernon 2: Oak Harbor took two three-set matches on its way to the Wesco North win. Scott Donnell won at No. 1 singles, 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, and No. 2 doubles duo Matt Davidson and Kyle Merriman won 6-1, 3-6, 7-5.

At Mount Vernon

Cascade 4, Stanwood 3: The Wesco North meet came down to the No. 3 singles match, and Cascade’s Chris DeBoli triumphed in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.

At Everett

Girls soccer

Archbishop Murphy 12, Snohomish Country Christian 0: Archbishop Murphy led 5-0 by halftime, then subbed out most of its starters en route to another decisive Northwest A victory. Kat Taylor scored four goals, while Michelle Linscott and Alicia Bourke added two each for the undefeated Wildcats.

At Everett

Goals-AM: Taylor 4, Linscott 2, Bourke 2, Shandera 1, Krell 1, Gaitan 1, Clancy 1. Goalkeepers-SCC: Castor. AM: Jelinek, Eberth. Records-S. County Christian 2-5 in league, 3-6 overall. A. Murphy 8-0, 8-0-3.

Boys soccer

Snohomish County Christian 3, Grace Academy 1: Kyle Mallory scored twice in the first half and Ken Kan added a goal in the second half as S.C.C built a 3-0 lead, then held on to claim its first Northwest A/B victory.

At Mountlake Terrace

Goals-GA: LeFors. SCC: Mallory 2, Kan 1. Goalkeepers-GA: not reported. SCC: Adams. Records-G. Academy 2-5 in league, 2-6 overall. S. County Christian 1-5, 1-7.

Volleyball

University Prep 3, Archbishop Murphy 0: At Everett, University Prep claimed the non-league match by scores of 28-26, 25-22, 25-13. Ashley Werner (nine kills, thee blocks), Christina Mitchell (six kills, two blocks) and Kayelynne Huggins (five blocks in one game played) led Archbishop Murphy (2-3 in league, 5-5 overall).
