Snohomish aces division title

LAKE STEVENS – The Snohomish boys tennis team generated another 7-0 victory on Monday.

Sweeps have become commonplace for the Panthers, but with this one, against Lake Stevens, Snohomish (clinched its fourth consecutive Western Conference North Division title.

The significance of winning the meet was initially lost on coach Dick Jansen, whose players informed him of the achievement after the final match ended.

Titles and sweeps are fine, Jansen said, but he enjoys watching his players mature and improve every day; players like Carl Merisko, who won at No. 4 singles, 7-5, 5-0, Monday. Merisko has gone undefeated since losing his first match of the season.

Tyler Stocker and Haiyang Zhang are undefeated in singles matches, and Zach Gordon has only one loss. In doubles, Snohomish’s No. 1 duo, Kelly Helms and Micah Perron, and its No. 2 team, Brendan Lacy and Kaleb Stevens, are also undefeated.

Most important, the players are friends on and off the court, Jansen said. “Their philosophy is ‘Leave no man behind.’ They get behind each other and coach each other.”
