Snohomish girls bounce Kamiak

MUKILTEO – The Snohomish girls basketball team got defensive Wednesday.

The Panthers stifled the Kamiak offense in taking a 47-25 first-round 4A District 1 playoff victory at the Kamiak gym.

Snohomish advanced to another showdown with Wesco North champion Monroe. The two teams meet in a winner-to-state semifinal at 6 p.m. Saturday at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

The two teams split two regular season games as Snohomish finished in a tie for second behind Monroe in the division standings.

Kamiak faces Shorewood in a loser-out game at noon Saturday at M-P.

The Panthers’ man-to-man defense held the Knights to just 10 first-half points.

Snohomish had an 18-4 run spanning the end of the second quarter and continuing after halftime to the end of the third period.

The Panthers held Nicole Bozek, whose season average is 13.5 points per game, to just seven points in the first three periods.

“It was neat to see them execute what we have been working on the last two days,” Snohomish head coach Ken Roberts said.

The second and third quarters have been good quarters all year for the Panthers, who have outscored their opponents 547-376.

“Because we have such depth and energy coming off the bench it helps us in those parts of the game,” Roberts said.

The Snohomish posts Margie Heard (four points), who was in foul trouble throughout the game and fouled out in the fourth quarter, and Katie Benson (six points) got help from Jessica Yates, Allison Burns and Shante Scott coming off the bench.

In the fourth quarter, the two teams traded baskets for two minutes with Bozek, who finished with 12 points, scoring six points and the Panthers’ Scott scoring 10 of her 12 points.

“It was neat to have her have that kind of night,” Roberts said.
