EVERETT — Snohomish’s Lindsey Kihm played like there was no tomorrow and now there isn’t for the Jackson Timberwolves.
The senior midfielder assisted on one goal and scored another as the Panthers eliminated Jackson 3-1 Tuesday in a loser-out Class 4A Northwest District girls soccer playoff game at Everett Memorial Stadium.
In another elimination game, Cascade, the 2002 state runnerup, failed to survive the first of three loser-out games it had to weather in order to return to the state playoffs, losing to Shorewood 1-0 in a shootout.
Shorewood and Snohomish play another loser-out game at 5 p.m. tonight at Mount Vernon High School. The winner of that game plays tonight’s Oak Harbor-Edmonds-Woodway loser on Friday at Mount Vernon. The winner of Friday’s game advances to the first round of the state playoffs.
Kihm created Snohomish’s first goal. She worked the ball through the defense, then crossed it across the goal mouth to teammate Carrie Patten for the finish in the eighth minute. Ten minutes later the Panthers were on the board again as Jill Trumbull drilled a shot into the net from 25 yards.
Jackson answered almost immediately, getting a goal by Dani Oster in the 20th minute.
Kihm went to work again in the 38th minute, working free on the left sideline, then passing the ball to teammate Jenny Gudmundson in the middle of the field, who returned the ball to Kihm for a shot into the right corner of the net.
"She will not appreciate this," Snohomish coach Dan Pingrey said, "but she is a man among girls. She’s one of the best players in the state when she puts her mind to it to take over a game and, today, she did just that."
"It’s my last year and I didn’t want it to be over," Kihm said. "I want to go to state."
Cascade’s season ended when its fifth kicker’s shot caromed off the right upright, giving Shorewood a 3-2 advantage in the shootout. Both goalies saved one shot and both teams missed one wide.
"It was nice to have luck on our side," Shorewood coach Joe Hampson said.
Neither Cascade nor Shorewood mounted many scoring threats. Cascade wound up with 10 shots, Shorewood with six. Cascade goalkeeper Brittany Gegax recorded five saves. Shorewood’s Brittany Williams had three in the first half. Teammate Tiffany Dillow had three in the second.
As Joe Hampson put it, it was a game played "between the 18s."
"It’s difficult to score goals," Cascade coach Jamie Gay said. "We needed to create opportunities and eliminate chances for our opponent."
The Bruins did just that. It was their 11th shutout.
"The defense played great," Gay said.
"I was pleased with how we played. We shut our opponent down and created opportunities. Unfortunately, we couldn’t finish."
That meant Gay had to console his players after the game.
"I had to say goodbye to a good group of kids who put in a lot of work," Gay said.
