Snohomish wins 10th straight crown

LAKE STEVENS – Snohomish completed a decade of dominance Thursday, winning its 10th straight girls swimming league championship.

The Panthers (7-0 Wesco North, 9-1 overall) edged Lake Stevens 102-81 in a meet that included six 4A state meet qualifying times.

“Team depth is what won the meet,” Snohomish coach John Pringle said.

Snohomish was led by its 200-yard freestyle relay team of Meghan Blue, Jasmine Labitzke, Anne Bilbo and Surya Manickam. They swam a state qualifying time and gave the Panthers the boost they needed. That race, Pringle said, “put us over the top.”

Lake Stevens had two relay teams post state qualifying times and the Vikings’ Kelly Conrad had qualifying times in two individual events.

Snohomish freshman Emily Ferreira swam a state time in the 100 breaststroke.

Pringle said the meet included many incredibly close races, most notably the 100 backstroke which Lake’s Samantha Purnell won by two one-hundredths of a second. Purnell was also on the 400 freestyle relay team which not only achieved a state qualifying time, but also broke the Lake Stevens school record for that event which had lasted since 1989.
