Snohomish wins Class 4A boys golf title

With just two players making the cut in the 4A boys golf state tournament, the Snohomish Panthers needed to be near-perfect to claim the team title Thursday at Canyon Lakes Golf Course in Kennewick.

The only thing standing between Snohomish and that perfect finish was Eastlake’s Kevin Penner, who tied for first with the Panthers’ Michael Jaeger and Dylan Stensland and won the individual championship with a birdie in a one-hole playoff. All three players shot 1-under-par 143 for the two-day event.

“It wasn’t the way we wanted it to turn out, but the team championship was our main goal,” Stensland said.

The two firsts gave Snohomish enough team points to edge Kentwood for the team title. its second overall and first since 2001.

The title was the third straight for a Wesco team coming after back-to-back championships by Kamiak in 2007 and 2008.

“I was really excited,” Jaeger said. “I’ve been waiting my whole high school career to win state and it finally happened.”

Both players had some catching up to do after Wednesday’s first round. Penner had a 68, while Jaeger shot 72 and Stensland shot 71. But Penner struggled on the front nine Thursday and finished with a 75, while Jaeger shot 71 and Stensland shot 72.

“Mike was in the next-to-last group and Dylan was in the last group so I positioned myself in between and tried to watch them both,” Snohomish coach Joey Mutcheson said.

“I knew they were both having tremendous rounds. They were playing for themselves and playing for the team. It was a pretty impressive performance.”

Geoff Birks of Meadowdale tied for seventh in the 3A competition with a 148, seven shots behind individual champion Daniel Snoey of Camas. Mount Si won the team title.

Sultan’s Brad Green finished tied for 16th in the 2A meet with a 152. Squalicum’s Matt Rawitzer was first with a 136. Lynden captured the team championship.

King’s had six golfers among the top 22 in the 1A meet and needed them all to edge Ilwaco for the team title. Calvin McCutchen led the Knights, finishing third with a 139, three shots behind individual winner Zach Wanderscheid of Goldendale.

Craig Crawford of Highland Christian completed his high school career with a second-place finish in the 1B/2B meet. The 2006 and 2008 champion was also second in 2007.

This year he was a distant second at 143, seven shots behind Jared Desoteaux of Northwest Christian, who had back-to-back 68s.
