TACOMA – Sophomore guard Daesha Henderson scored 14 points to lead the Snohomish girls basketball team to a 51-38 victory over Port Angeles on Wednesday in the first round of the Class 4A state playoffs.
Typical of a Snohomish box score, six players – Henderson, Kristin Moore (six points), Tara Angell (seven), Sydney Benson (five), Amanda Best (nine) and Emily Cassidy (seven) scored five or more points for the Panthers.
Snohomish will play the winner of Wednesday’s Richland-Foss game Thursday in the 7 p.m. quarterfinal at the Tacoma Dome.
The Panthers were more relieved than thrilled about Wednesday’s victory. Though they maintained a lead of nine or more points for the final 14 minutes, Snohomish coach Ken Roberts believed his team was a bit gun-shy.
“We were a bit timid today,” said Roberts, whose team scored few point in only one game this season – a 58-41 loss to No. 1 Prairie. “We need to do a better job.”
Benson grabbed nine rebounds and Cassidy pulled down eight to help Snohomish win the battle of the boards 35-31.
