Snohomish wins third game in four days

SNOHOMISH – It’s been a long and difficult road for the Snohomish High School boys basketball team this week. But despite the adversity and the weariness, the Panthers managed to come through Friday night.

Playing their third game in four days, the Panthers came from behind to defeat the Stanwood Spartans 61-59 to remain in first place in the Western Conference North Division.

Darrel Martin scored 22 points, Marcus Reinhard scored all eight of his points in the fourth quarter and Cris Lorenzen sank a tie-breaking 3-pointer for Snohomish (10-1 league, 11-4 overall), which won its ninth straight.

“I’m really excited because we had a busy week,” said Snohomish coach Len Bone, whose team beat Oak Harbor 76-63 Tuesday and Arlington 34-32 Wednesday. “It was our third game in four days and it’s also finals week and we have a tired team. So I was proud of the way the guys battled.

“We’ve just had a lot of tight ones,” Bone added. “It’s good to see our guys doing some good things in close games.”

Snohomish trailed by as many as seven in the second half. But Reinhard and Martin led Snohomish’s charge down the stretch. Then with the score tied 57-57, Lorenzen hit his trey with 22 seconds remaining to give the Panthers the lead.

Stanwood’s Todd Hinderman sank a 10-footer with 10 seconds remaining to cut the lead to one. After Martin made one free throw Stanwood had a final chance to tie, but a the Spartans were unable to convert on a drive to the hoop at the buzzer.

Jon Brockman added 16 points for Snohomish, which avenged a 59-55 loss to Stanwood earlier in the season.

“I thought we defended them better,” Bone said. “Their quickness is hard to defend. Then we shot the ball better tonight.”

Daes Kaufman scored 23 points to lead Stanwood (6-4, 8-6). Hinderman finished with 14 and Chris Boser added 10.
