Sophomore trio lead Snohomish to Wesco North win

MARYSVILLE – Sophomores Kolby Nichol, Kelsey Randolf and Surya Manickam led Snohomish to its eighth straight league championship Saturday at Marysville-Pilchuck High School as the Panthers won the Wesco North sectional swim meet with 386 points, 167 more than second-place Lake Stevens.

“Overall it was a great team effort, which is what I’ve been trying to tell the girls all season,” Snohomish coach John Pringle said.

Nichol won the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 2.54 seconds. Randolf won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.63. Manickam won the 500 freestyle in 5:28.23. Nichol swam on the first-place 400 freestyle relay. Randolf and Manickam swam on the first-place 200 freestyle relay.

Snohomish junior Deborah Shawback swam state-qualifying times in two events, the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke.

“Debra Shawback, our junior swimming in the 100 free and backstroke, had a great meet in the prelims Thursday and today. She managed to get her qualifying times taken care of,” Pringle said.

Shawback and senior Kirsten Behla are the only upper classmen on the Snohomish squad who qualified for next week’s state meet, giving Snohomish one of its youngest-ever teams going into the state meet.

“This (team) I can’t say is any better, its very gratifying cause we have a young group of kids that we can grow with and maybe make some noise in state in the next couple of years. We have a lot of learning going on,” Pringle said.

“Our goal is to be a top-five team, like we were last year. We’re still young and have a few years to learn.”

“I like Kamiak, they’re deep and fast up front with three quality relays.”

Oak Harbor’s Missy McIntyre, a two-event defending state champion, swam automatic All-America times in the 50-yard freestyle (23.65) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.02) and helped Oak Harbor qualify its 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Lake Stevens’ Kelly Conrad won the 200 individual medley and 100 freestyle.

Marysville-Pilchuck’s Brittany Berg, Lauren Verbon and Shantelle Souza finished 1-2-3 in the diving competition.
