Busy night
Everett AquaSox shortstop Rob Hudson knew he was having a busy day during Saturday’s 12-3 victory over Yakima. But he had no idea just how busy.
Hudson tied the Northwest League record for assists, making 12 throws that led to outs. That tied the record set by Spokane’s Dwayne Lewis in 1995.
“Did I?” was Hudson’s reaction Sunday when told he tied the record. “I was not aware of that. How many did I have? Twelve?”
Hudson had 10 assists going into the ninth inning. He then picked up one turing a double play and got the tying assist on the final play of the game. He did not commit an error.
“It felt like I had a few balls come my way,” Hudson said. “But I was just doing what I’m supposed to do, get the ball and throw it to first. I’m glad I tied it, that’s nice.”
The pick of Hudson’s throws came in the sixth. With Everett leading 8-2, two runners on and one out, Leyson Septimo laced a double off the center-field wall, scoring one run. However, Hudson took the relay throw from center fielder Trevor Heid and sent a strike to home, where catcher J.B. Tucker tagged out Brandon Burgess to help stem the rally.
“That cutoff one was hard because I had to backhand the cut and throw it home blind,” Hudson said. “That was one of the harder plays. But other than that I got to sit back and just throw it to first.”
Short hops: Luis Valbuena’s two-homer night Saturday was Everett’s second of the season. Casey Craig smashed a pair of homers on July 9 in a 12-11 home victory over Salem-Keizer. … The AquaSox played in camouflage uniforms Sunday. Everett will play in camouflage two more time before auctioning the jerseys off in a silent auction on Aug. 30. The proceeds go to Camp Erin which provides grief support for children having lost a loved one.
