Spartan girls win opener

STANWOOD – Rachele Kloke finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 18 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, to lead the Stanwood girls basketball team to a season-opening 63-38 victory over Edmonds-Woodway Monday in a non-league contest at Stanwood High School.

“I’m very pleased with how hard they played,” Spartans head coach Dennis Kloke said of his team. “They committed very few mental errors.”

Kayla Shaughnessy added 15 points for Stanwood (1-0 overall) and Dawnia Sudweeks had 10 points.

The Spartans opened the second half with a 22-19 lead, but when Rachele Kloke and Sudweeks got into foul trouble in the third quarter, Stanwood’s bench – led by Shaughnessy – came through.

“I was really pleased with how the kids continued to press and perform in the third,” Dennis Kloke said. “In the past when we’ve lost our scorers we haven’t been able to maintain.”

Jennifer Singh had 12 points to lead Edmonds-Woodway (0-2).

Tarin Nicholas finished with eight points, 11 rebounds and six steals for the Spartans.
