TACOMA — The Stanwood boys basketball team is still alive in the Class 4A state tournament — just barely.
The Spartans held off a furious fourth-quarter rally to beat the Auburn Trojans 73-67 in a loser-out game Thursday morning at the Tacoma Dome.
Stanwood (17-8) entered the fourth quarter with a 59-45 lead, but Auburn cut the difference to 69-67 in the final minute.
Stanwood’s Kale Schmidt sealed the victory with four free throws in the final 17.5 seconds. The free throws capped a monster game for Schmidt, who scored a game-high 39 points.
Kevin Henderson led Auburn (16-11) with 30 points.
Stanwood plays at 11 a.m. Friday in a loser-out game against either Skyline or Davis.
