Stanwood steals win from M-P

STANWOOD – A Tyler Monroe steal and pass to create a Derek Anderson dunk with three seconds left helped erase an 18-point deficit for the Stanwood boys basketball team Friday.

The Spartans captured an 83-81 come-from-behind Wesco North victory over Marysville-Pilchuck at Stanwood high school.

“Our first lead of the game was with three seconds left,” Stanwood coach Brian Hunter said. “We buckled down on defense and kept chipping away at it.”

Marysville Pilchuck was leading 48-30 with less than four minutes to go in the second quarter before the Spartans comeback started. Stanwood was able to chip into the Tomahawks lead and bring it down to nine points at the half.

“To get it to a manageable number was huge going into halftime,” Hunter said. “It gave us a little momentum.”

Anderson hit a 3-point field goal with 1 minute, 30 seconds to go to bring the Spartans within two points. After a pair of Stanwood free-throws tied the score, Stanwood’s Monroe stripped the ball from a driving Tomahawk and hit Anderson streaking down the court for the game-winning dunk.

Jared Stohl’s 25-foot 3-point attempt rattled out at the buzzer for M-P.

Stohl lit up the Spartans from the outside, burying eight 3-pointers, and finished with a game-high 31 points. Stohl started hot with 15 points in the first quarter.

“He put on a clinic tonight,” Hunter said. “Shots he made were unbelievable. There were hands in his face on almost every shot.”

Senior David Lipinski had the toughest task as he scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebound against Tomahawks Division I recruit Nathan Lozeau.

“Lipinski played incredible,” Hunter said. “To do that against him (Lozeau), that’s saying something.”
