Stanwood takes advantage of Tomahawks’ foul trouble

MARYSVILLE – When three guards are on the bench in foul trouble, a team is going to have a tough time pulling out a win.

The Marysville-Pilchuck girls basketball team found that out first hand Friday night, falling to Stanwood 58-52 in a Wesco North game at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

“Really bad foul trouble” is what M-P girls basketball coach Julie Martin said hurt her team the most in the game.

After jumping out to an early lead, the Tomahawks (1-2 in league, 4-2 overall) had to sit three guards on the bench for the entire second quarter, in which they were outscored 17-5. During the first half, Stanwood made 15 of 20 free throws, to help it go into halftime with a lead.

Led by Laura Degerness, who was 8-for-10 from the field and finished the game with a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds, M-P regained the lead by the end of the third quarter.

But fouls and another obstacle allowed Stanwood to muscle its way back into the game.

“We had the most turnovers in that quarter,” Martin said of the final quarter. That, coupled with the fouls, allowed the Spartans to regain the lead and pull away.

Rachele Kloke of Stanwood (1-2, 3-3) led all scorers with 21 points and Kayla Shaughnessy scored seven of her 11 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Spartans to victory.
