State tournaments roundup for Saturday, May 27:

SOFTBALL

4A State Tournament

At Columbia Playfield (Richland)

Championship

Jackson 5, Glacier Peak 1 (6)

RICHLAND — Jackson and Glacier Peak were on a collision course to meet up in the 2023 Class 4A state softball championship games on Saturday evening.

Placed on opposite sides of the 16-team bracket, the rival Wesco 4A high schools, which are located less than five miles apart, made the three-and-a-half hour drive to the Columbia Playfields over Memorial Day weekend to make their respective cases for the state crown.

After the Grizzlies and the Timberwolves knocked down their opponents one-by-one, the all-Wesco title game was set in stone.

By the end of the night, the No. 1 seed Timberwolves hoisted up their third state championship trophy since 2018, but it wasn’t how anyone expected it to happen.

No. 6 Glacier Peak 2, No. 10 Kentwood 1

No. 1 Jackson 9, No. 4 Richland 3

Consolation (loser out)

Bothell 12, Kamiak 6

RICHLAND — After grinding through a tripleheader that stretched throughout Friday’s opening round games, the Kamiak softball team met its match on Day 2 of the Class 4A state tournament at the Columbia Playfields.

The ninth-seeded Knights (21-7) dropped their initial matchup against Rogers (Puyallup) before rifling off back-to-back wins over Kamiakin and Skyline in loser-outs to remain alive in Saturday’s action.

Kamiak ran into No. 2 seeded Bothell in the consolation bracket on Saturday morning, falling 12-6 in what was the Knights’ season end cap.

“These girls have been the most amazing athletes to bring to this tournament,” ninth-year head coach Ann Bradley said after the loss. “They’ve been nothing but positive with each other, they played for each other. They’re all about teamwork and this has been a dream ride all season.”

If the Knights got through the consolation gauntlet, the prize would have been a third-place finish, as both Wesco 4A members Glacier Peak and Jackson rode into the championship round.

“The dream was to get one, two and three, so they’ve been very supportive of us. … I just wish the two of them the best of luck in the championship game. That’s gonna be a battle for sure, it’s been fun.”

3A State Tournament

At Regional Athletic Complex (Lacey)

Championship

Peninsula 4, Snohomish 1

LACEY — Throughout this season the Snohomish High School softball team found a way to overcome every obstacle that stood in its path.

But at the end there was one riddle the Panthers couldn’t solve: Alli Kimball.

The Peninsula star senior tossed a three-hitter in the circle and belted the decisive three-run home run at the plate, and Snohomish had to settle for a second-place trophy as the Panthers fell to the Seahawks 4-1 in the Class 3A state championship game Saturday afternoon at the Regional Athletic Complex.

“It hurts, but us nine seniors, we’d been planning since day one of tryouts that we’re going to the state championship,” Snohomish ace pitcher Skyla Bristol said. “Honestly, we’re happy with what came out of it. But it does sting a little.”

Second-seeded Snohomish came oh so close to capturing the second softball state title in school history, beating Walla Walla 7-3 Saturday morning to reach the championship game, then carrying a 1-1 pitchers duel between Kimball and Bristol into the sixth inning of the title contest.
