Rest? Who needs it?
Apparently the Monroe High School volleyball team doesn’t, because the Bearcats just completed a 3-0 sweep of the Edmonds-Woodway Warriors in the 4A tournament after having no time to relax following an earlier loser-out victory. Monroe will play Shadle Park of Spokane in the fifth/eighth-place match this evening.
Monroe is guaranteed to win the first 4A top-8 trophy in program history. Coming into today, it had lost 12 consecutive state-tourney matches dating to 1998.
But now, in head coach Dawn Hanson’s ninth and final season, the Bearcats will win a trophy.
Monroe players and coaches cried tears of joy and relief, and exchanged hugs after the triumph over Edmonds-Woodway.
“It’s because they’ve had this goal since forever and we finally broke through and did it,” Hanson said, “and they’re so happy for each other. And I’m sure they’re happy for me.”
Meanwhile, Kamiak is looking good in its loser-out consolation match against Skyview of Vancouver. The Knights, ranked No. 3 in 4A, won Game 1 and leads Game 2, 9-4. Kamiak is trying to advance to tonight’s fourth/seventh-place match.
