Summers captures district singles

STANWOOD – Meadowdale’s Lauren Summers, the top seed from the Wesco South, held off Wesco North No. 1 seed, Chandi Sun, 6-4, 6-3, to win the singles championship Friday in the 4A District 1 tournament at Stanwood High School.

Grace Lee and Jill Trumbull of Snohomish captured the doubles crown with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Meghan Amundson and Lauren Crawford of Stanwood.

Stanwood’s Angela Schonberg took third place in singles, earning a state berth and helping lead the Spartans to the team title.

3A District 1 meet: At Shoreline, Jesse Hoffman and Derek Clemmons, who finished 1-2 in the long jump Wednesday, helped Shorecrest finish second to Burlington-Edison in the team-title chase. Clemmons won the 300-meter hurdles and Hoffman was third in the 100, two spots behind teammate Kevin Ramos, who won the sprint. Another event winner for the Scots was Ikenna Acholonu in the 110 hurdles. The Scots also swept the relay races. Tim Carrithers of Lynnwood qualified for state in two events, the 200 and 400.
