CHENEY – South Whidbey’s Karen Schwager raced to a third-place finish in the 3,200 meters Thursday during the opening day of competition at the state Class AA-A-B track and field championships at Eastern Washington University.
Schwager’s showing was overshadowed by the AA meet-record time of North Cascades Conference rival Bobeya Krishnek of Mount Baker in the same race. Krishnek finished in 11:11.45 to demolish the previous record of 11:26.74, set last year by Kendra Colyar of Lakeside.
Mount Baker scored 15 points as the three-day meet began.
Defending Class A girls champion Kings scored 14 points on Thursday, aided by the 2-3 finish of Tricia Hansen (11:54.34) and Rachel Strand (11:56.48) in the 3,200 meters.
In the boys competition, Adam Roe of King’s placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:26.58. Teammate Brandon Thompson was seventh in 4:35.12.
Reid Carrell won the boys 1600 with a time of 4:24.85 to give Freeman an early lead with 21 points after two events. Teammate Jake Depell defended his Class A pole vault title with a vault of 14-feet, 1 inch to better his effort last year of 13-0.
Barry Leavitt of Kiona-Benton set a meet record in the preliminaries of the Class AA boys 300-meter hurdles. His time of 39.07 broke the previous Class AA meet record of 39.23, set by Scott Alexander of Quincy in 1999.
