One of the annual highlights of spring training is here (no, it’s not because this is the one and only off day for the Mariners).
The Mariners have unveiled their TV commercials. You can see them here.
The “Larry Bernandez” spot is sure to be a favorite, but for some reason I like the one featuring GM Jack Zduriencik and the guy, who’s getting his hairy chest waxed, saying “Oh, I can handle pain. I’m a Mariners fan.” Nothing like a good chest waxing to make a guy laugh. Especially if it’s not my chest.
There’s Jason Vargas offering fellow starting pitcher Doug Fister his lucky socks, center fielder Franklin Gutierrez teaching a hapless group how to chase down fly balls in “Camp Guti,” and Chone Figgins and Justin Smoak deciding to see if Ichiro Suzuki really can hit anything thrown his way. At the end, Ichiro borrows a line from golfer Bubba Watson and responds to his amazing feats with “You’re welcome.”
Take a look and the commercials and let me know what you think.
Besides the commercials, we also have the unveiling of the Mariners’ slogan for the year. Unfortunately, they didn’t use any of my suggestions from a few weeks ago. Maybe I got those to them a little too late. Yeah, I’m sure that’s the reason.
Anyway, this year’s slogan is “Ready to Play.” After last year, everyone had better hope they are.
