I came across this photo of the world’s largest fly rod the other day in my files and thought I’d share.
The rod is located in the small community of Houston, British Columbia and was created to promote tourism.
I stopped by while heading to a British Columbia lake just below Alaska that had the largest trout I’ve even seen (more on that later). I would never have stopped by if I wasn’t already heading through town.
The fly rod, built in 1990, is 60 feet long with a reel that’s three feet long.
The fly attached to the line is 21 inches and a bright orange Skykomish Sunrise, a popular Northwest steelhead pattern.
It was created by selling shares of the rod for $5, giving the buyers a numbered certificate of ownership.
It was made of aluminum and anodized bronze made to look like graphite. It weighs 800 pounds.
And you thought spey rods were heavy.
