Timeout …

Zack Aker loves the fast-paced aspect of basketball, but as a third-year varsity player he sees the court through experienced eyes. “The older you get, the more the game slows down,” said the 6-foot guard. Off the court, Aker relaxes by playing the piano and enjoys co-leading a Christian youth group.

Coach’s corner Aker, a second-year starter, leads Lake Stevens with a scoring average of 10.7 points, but his best asset is his ability to pester opponents on defense, Lake Stevens coach Mark Hein said: “He’s turned into our defensive stopper this year.” Aker, a co-captain, inspires teammates with his work ethic and preparation, said Hein: “He’s a great kid. I care about him a lot. He’s done a lot for our program.”

Speak up What are the most important responsibilities for a captain? “You have to lead by example,” said Aker, who averages 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals. “You gotta make sure that guys are seeing you do your best out there.” Vocal leadership is also crucial, Aker said. He always tries to get his teammates psyched up before a game.

Favorite athlete Ray Allen of the Seattle SuperSonics. Aker said he first noticed the high-scoring guard when Milwaukee traded him to Seattle in 2003. “I just love watching him play,” Aker said of the six-time NBA All-Star. “He’s such a good shooter, and he’s calm and composed.”

Favorite sports movie “Remember the Titans” (2000). Aker said he likes the message of the high school football flick, which stars Denzel Washington and addresses racial integration. “You gotta play as a team if you want to be successful,” said Aker.

Favorite TV show “SportsCenter” on ESPN. Aker said he sometimes watches the same episode of the addictive show back to back to back. “That’s when you know you have to step away from the TV,” he said.

Life lessons Aker is a member of Young Life, a non-denominational Christian ministry. He’s also a leader for WyldLife, Young Life’s ministry for middle school students. Aker, who works with kids from North Lake and Lake Stevens middle schools, said the best part is “building relationships with the kids. Pretty much the whole goal is just to lead them toward Christ.”

Piano man The last six months Aker has been taking informal piano lessons from a friend. “I love it. It’s just a way to relax and just do your own thing,” Aker said. The first song he learned was “Clocks” by Coldplay – much cooler than “Hot Cross Buns” or “Mary Had a Little Lamb.”
