Timeout with … Kaylee Diggs, Lakewood girls basketball

How was your holiday break?

My break’s been good. I got a lot of good presents from my parents. And I got to see a lot of my family that I don’t usually see, so that was good.

What was the best present you got for Christmas?

My mom bought me Ugg boots.

What did you do for Christmas?

For Christmas Eve we went to my uncle’s house in Arlington with my mom’s parents and my brother and my cousins. And then for Christmas Day we opened presents at my house in the morning and then we went over to my stepdad’s parent’s house.

So it was a busy couple of days?

Yeah. They usually are.

What’s your favorite holiday movie?

I really like “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” I probably watched that three times over break.

The cartoon movie or the one with Jim Carrey?

The one with Jim Carrey, definitely. I think Jim Carrey is really funny and I think he does that part very well.

So…how’s school?

School’s good. I just recently got accepted to WSU and Western (Washington). So, I’m excited for next year. I’m ready to graduate.

Do you know where you want to go or what you want to do?

I want to do something with medicine. That’s all I really know. I don’t know like super-specific. Maybe working with children or something like that.

Do you want to go to school near where you live now or far away?

I think I want to go closer to home at least the first couple of years and then maybe switch later.

What do you think of your basketball season so far?

Well we’re getting a slow start but everyday we’re just going to get better and work harder. I’m ready for the rest of the season and to play more teams from our league. We’ve been playing a bunch of teams from the (Wesco) North that are really good. So, I’m ready to start playing people from our league.

What are you hoping for during the last half of the season?

We gotta get some Ws! I’m hoping that we improve. We kind of have an older group of girls but not very many people have played basketball for very long, so I’m hoping that we can improve and maybe get some of our younger players – the underclassmen – on our team to improve for next year.

What is it about basketball that you like the most?

I like basketball because it’s physical and I like being able to, not necessarily hit people, but beat up a little. And it’s faster paced so I like being able to move on from my mistakes and go right into the next play and not fret over them for 30 seconds like in football and other sports.

Do you play any other sports?

Yeah. I play volleyball and basketball and I play golf in the spring.

What is it about golf that’s so much fun?

Golf is my relaxation sport. Some people are like, ‘Oh golf, it’s very mental.’ But I don’t take it that way. It’s sort of like my offseason, but not really. It’s sort of my fun time. Compared to like volleyball and basketball which are so much more serious.

I was going to ask, with a name like Diggs you must play volleyball, right?

It’s funny, everyone always says, ‘Oh Diggs, that’s a perfect volleyball name.’ And I have another player on team whose last name is ‘Block.’

Could you guys find someone with the last name ‘Kill’ to complete the team?

Another girl on the basketball team plays volleyball too and her name is ‘Cannon.’

What do you like to do in your free time?

I like hanging out with my friends. And listening to music. And I work at the Boys and Girls Club, which I have a lot of fun with in the summer. That’s pretty much it. I don’t have much free time.

Do you enjoy school?

I do. I like school. I like learning. And Lakewood’s a very cool place. Recently, we’ve become a lot more accepting of other people. So coming to school is fun, and more enjoyable than it used to be.

What will you miss most about high school?

I’ll miss my friends and seeing them every day, but obviously I’ll make new friends. I think I’ll miss how the teachers are so nice here. I’m afraid I’ll get to college and professors are going to be very strict and mean.

If you could go anywhere in the world where would you go?

It’s funny that you say that because just over break I was watching the Oklahoma City Thunder basketball game, ‘cause the NBA started back up, and I told my stepdad, ‘Bill, all I want to do is go dress up in all Sonics gear to an Oklahoma game and sit in the front row.’ I think that would be so fun.

So you miss the Sonics?

Yes I do. I love the Sonics. Me and my friend Chelsea wanted to go down to Portland when they played there. I really wish we had them back!

Who’s your favorite player in the NBA?

I really love Ray Allen. I think he’s a down-to-earth guy. He’s great at three-balls.

Do you have any New Year’s resolutions?

Well, I want to win some basketball games. I think that’s my New Year’s resolution.
