Timeout with … Ryan Canfield, Shorecrest boys basketball

How was your Christmas?

It was good. We just had a family dinner where all our relatives just got together. There was like 35 of us. All of my mom’s side.

Does it kind of stink being at practice the day after Christmas?

Yeah. But at least it wasn’t early in the morning. We could sleep in.

What’s the coolest thing you got for Christmas?

We got a new TV.

How big is it?

It wasn’t that big, but it’s a nice TV. We needed one. We cleared out this storage room and we’re putting a TV and a couch in there.

How far along are you in school?

I’m a senior.

How is being a senior?

It’s tiring. But it’s almost over – all the college apps.

You looking forward to being done with it?

Yep. January 1st.

What are your plans for after high school?

Go to college. It depends on where I get accepted.

Where have you applied?

I applied to UC Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara, U-Dub and Cal Poly. And I’m still gonna apply to Stanford, Brown, Dartmouth and Harvey Mudd.

Wow. What do you want to do?

Some type of engineering.

Your coach told us you travel a lot, where all have you been?

I went to Costa Rica with our basketball team and built a basketball court for the local community for a week. That was two summers ago. And I also went to Brazil with my mom for a couple of weeks. Then last summer I went to Japan for two weeks with my Japanese class.

Which trip was your favorite?

Probably the Japanese trip. The Japanese trip and the Costa Rica trip were both my favorite, but I liked the Japanese trip because I was with a bunch of friends and the food was really amazing. But the Costa Rica trip was a good experience because we really were in a rural community that didn’t really have much compared to how we live in America.

Your whole team went to Costa Rica?

It was about half of the varsity team and half the JV team at the time, which was a couple years ago. So there’s probably five or six people that are on the team that went on the trip.

What do you think of your team this season so far?

I think we’re starting to play better than at the beginning of the season. It took us awhile to kind of hit our stride but now we’re getting players back from injuries and it’s looking good.

What are your goals for the rest of the season?

Well, last year we just missed out on a home playoff game so that would be nice to have and then hopefully we can make it to state. That’s the big goal.

What’s your favorite part about playing basketball?

It’s just fun to be part of a team and the home games are always really fun. Especially when you have crowds and especially against rivals.

What’s your least favorite part?

How much time it takes up. But it’s worth it.

What else do you like to do in your free time?

I play baseball too. I play baseball for Shorecrest and we’re starting workouts after break.

Which one’s your favorite, baseball or basketball?

Whichever one I’m playing.

Do you miss having an NBA team in Seattle?

Yeah. The season just started and our team that moved to Oklahoma City is doing pretty well now. And I think that we could have had that here. Especially, since we don’t have many successful professional teams here.

Do you think Clay Bennett’s the worst person ever?

I don’t really… When it happened I didn’t really pay attention to it, everything that happened with the Sonics. So, I’m not really sure.

Who’s your favorite player in the NBA?

Probably Kevin Durant. He’s good. And he was on the Sonics.

Anything you want to add about life? Or give any advice to freshman just coming to high school?

Just enjoy high school. It goes fast.
