PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. – The Everett Silvertips were part of history Tuesday night.
And oh, by the way, they happened to win themselves a banner, too.
Participating in the first four-point night in WHL history, Everett came away with a split from its two games against the Prince George Cougars, clinching the U.S. Division championship in the process.
Everett came from behind to win the first game, continued from a previous postponement, 3-2 in a shootout. Then the Tips blew a two-goal lead and lost the regularly scheduled game 6-4.
However, that first victory was all Everett (49-11-1-2) needed to clinch the division title, thanks to Tri-City’s 5-1 loss at Regina. It is Everett’s second straight division crown and third in four seasons of existence.
The Tips also became the league’s first team to clinch a division title, wrapping it up with nine games still remaining.
Prince George is 29-27-3-5.
The quasi-doubleheader was needed because when the teams played on Oct. 28, the game was postponed after two periods because of damaged ice. Therefore, the teams began Tuesday by completing that game, both lineups containing significant changes because of injuries and roster turnover.
Everett went into the third period trailing 2-1. However, Peter Mueller tied it up with a wrist shot on the power play 7 minutes, 35 seconds in to make it 2-2 and eventually force a shootout.
The first eight shooters in the shootout all missed, with Everett goaltender Leland Irving making several big saves. Then Brandon Campos converted for the Tips and Irving stoned Jared Walker to give Everett the victory and the division championship.
The one drawback for Everett in the first game was the loss of leading goal scorer Moises Gutierrez. Gutierrez had to be assisted off the ice after a three-way collision between himself, Prince George defenseman Kalvin Sagert and the boards. He did not return for the second game as Everett, with just 20 bodies available, played short.
In the second game, Zach Hamill shot Everett to an early lead, but the Cougars countered with Greg Gardner’s rebound goal on the power play.
The goals then began flowing in the second period as both teams scored three times – Jesse Smyke, Campos and Mueller for Everett; Gardner, Devin Setoguchi and Dana Tyrell for Prince George. Everett scored the first two to go ahead 3-1, but couldn’t hold it as it was 4-4 going into the third.
Prince George scored the deciding goal at 11:44 of the third period when Setoguchi had a short-handed break away and beat Irving. Richard Rapac added a late empty-net goal.
Everett was missing its top three left wings: Kyle Beach (at the Canada Winter Games), Ondrej Fiala (knee injury) and Brennan Sonne (spleen injury), as well as defenseman Taylor Ellington (neck injury).
Prince George welcomed back one of its top offensive players Nick Drazenovic, who missed nearly a month with a hip injury.
