EVERETT — The choice as the Everett Silvertips’ most valuable player was a split decision.
Right wing Shane Harper and defenseman Taylor Ellington were named the team’s co-MVPs for the 2008-09 season during the team’s annual awards ceremony following Saturday night’s game.
Harper, a 19-year-old from Valencia, Calif., became the team’s go-to offensive player during the second half of the season. Through Everett’s first 70 games Harper led the team in goals with 32 and was second in points with 66.
Ellington, a 20-year-old from Victoria, B.C., has been the team’s defensive mainstay all season long. Going into Saturday he had five goals, and 25 assists.
In other awards:
n The rookie of the year award was given to right wing Kellan Tochkin. The 17-year-old from Abbotsford, B.C., went into Saturday leading both the Tips and all WHL rookies in scoring with 72 points (19 goals, 53 assists).
n The most improved player award went to winger Cameron Abney. The 17-year-old rookie from Aldergrove, B.C., began the season as a part-time player and ended it as Everett’s biggest physical presence up front.
n The unsung hero award was given to defenseman Graham Potuer. The 20-year-old from Red Deer, Alberta, led the team in blocked shots and also chipped in with nine goals and 16 assists.
n The coaches award was given to center Byron Froese. The 17-year-old rookie from Winkler, Manitoba, became one of Everett’s top two-way players, notching 19 goals and 36 assists.
n Four players received the ironman award. Harper, Tochkin, Froese and Zack Dailey played in each of Everett’s first 71 games.
n Left wing Tyler Maxwell was given the scholastic player of the year award, while Froese and Shayne Brown shared the community relations award.
