Tips Week in Review: Everett goes 3-1 in four-game road trip

The Silvertips scored 17 goals, conceded nine across four games.

While still on their seven-game road trip — six in Canada and one in Oregon — the Everett Silvertips (7-2) played four games last week and produced a 3-1 result, moving atop the Western Conference standings.

They tallied 17 goals and conceded nine in their 4-1, 5-1 and 6-3 victories against Brandon, Regina and Swift Current, respectively, and a 4-2 loss to Moose Jaw.

Everett 4, Brandon 1

The Silvertips faced the Wheat Kings last Tuesday. Trailing 1-0 after the first period, Everett rallied and netted three goals in the second period and notched the fourth within the last minute of the third period. Defenseman Landon DuPont scored the Silvertips’ first (assisted by left winger Dominik Rymon) and fourth (unassisted) goals. Center Beau Courtney (assisted by center Andrew Petruk and defenseman Tarin Smith) and right winger Jesse Heslop (assisted by right winger Caden Brown and Smith) scored Everett’s other goals about two minutes apart. Goalie Jesse Sanche saved 30 of 31 shots.

Everett 5, Regina 1

The Silvertips battled the Pats last Wednesday. This time, Everett opened the scoring in the first period from Heslop (assisted by center Tyler MacKenzie). The Silvertips netted their next three goals each about three minutes apart in the second period from center Carter Bear (assisted by DuPont and defenseman Eric Jamieson), DuPont (assisted by Smith and Bear) and center Julius Miettinen (assisted by DuPont and Jamieson). Center Caine Wilke recorded his first goal (assisted by Smith and right winger Caden Brown) of the season with less than two minutes remaining in the third period. Sanche saved 26 of 27 shots.

Moose Jaw 4, Everett 2

The Silvertips struck first against the Warriors last Friday within the first eight minutes of the contest from Heslop’s goal (assisted by Brown and MacKenzie). But a goal by Moose Jaw in the last 15 seconds of the first period tied it 1-1. Everett trailed 2-1 in the second period until Heslop tallied his second goal (assisted by left winger Julien Maze and defenseman Kaden Hammell) with less than three minutes remaining. But two more goals from Moose Jaw in the third period handed the Silvertips their second loss this season.

Everett 6, Swift Current 3

The Silvertips netted four goals in the first period and two in the third against the Broncos last Saturday. MacKenzie (unassisted), Rymon (assisted by Bear and DuPont), Bear (assisted by Miettinen and Smith) and Bear again (assisted by defenseman Rylan Pearce) tallied goals in the first period. Jamieson (assisted by Heslop and left winger Nolan Chastko) and MacKenzie (assisted by Bear) registered goals in the third period. Goalie Alex Garrett saved 24 of 27 shots.

Three stars of the Week

First stars: Landon DuPont and Carter Bear. The 15-year-old defenseman and 18-year-old center each recorded three goals and three assists across four games last week to help slot Everett into first place in the Western Conference standings.

Second star: Jesse Heslop. The 18-year-old right winger tallied four goals and one assist last week.

Third star: Tarin Smith. The 18-year-old defenseman assisted five goals last week.

The week ahead

The Silvertips have one game scheduled for this week against Portland on Oct. 19, and it’s their final matchup of their seven-game road trip. Everett skated past the Winterhawks in their second game of the season 8-2. The Silvertips return to Angel of the Winds Arena on Oct. 23.
