Where will the area’s top student-athletes go to college? Stay tuned: Many of them will make their plans official this week.
Starting on Wednesday, Class of 2011 high school seniors who play basketball, baseball, softball, volleyball and several other sports are allowed to sign an NCAA National Letter of Intent. Athletes who sign a Letter of Intent formally agree to attend a particular college and accept athletic financial aid.
The early signing period for the previously mentioned sports goes through Nov. 17, but quite a few area recruits are scheduled to sign on Wednesday during various high school ceremonies, including:
*Derek Callahan, Edmonds-Woodway High (Gonzaga University baseball)
*Sydney Donaldson, Edmonds-Woodway High (Western Washington University women’s basketball)
*Leigh-Ann Haataja, Jackson (Portland State University women’s volleyball)
*Meaghan Hess, Lake Stevens High (Monmouth University women’s lacrosse)
*Brett Kingma, Jackson High (University of Oregon men’s basketball)
*Suzanna Ohlsen, Monroe High (Seattle Pacific University women’s basketball)
Do you know any other local prep athletes who plan to sign today or sometime during the initial NCAA fall signing period? Send details to mcane@heraldnet.com. (The regular signing period for other major sports — including football and soccer — is in February.)
