Treat’s HR helps M-P win its fifth straight

MARYSVILLE- Donny Treat hit a home run in the third inning and pitcher Tim Waters struck out seven batters to lead Marysville-Pilchuck to an 8-4 victory over Monroe in a Western Conference North Division baseball game Tuesday.

Treat’s three run blast broke a 1-1 tie and set off a three-inning rally which saw the Tomahawks score seven runs. Marysville, which improved to 4-1 in league and 7-2 overall, extended its winning streak to five games.

“We have been playing very well,” M-P coach Josh Rosenbach said. “Last week we gave up just two earned runs and struck out 38 batters in three games. We have had solid pitching and very good defense.”

The Tomahawks scored a run in the fourth inning and three in the fifth inning.

“We got some important insurance runs in the fifth inning,” Rosenbach said. “And, we scored two of those runs with two outs.”

Monroe’s Michael Brady gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the second inning. The Tomahawks, however, answered in the bottom half of the inning on a James Day double, which scored Carl Benton from second base.

Day batted 2-for-3 with two RBI. Pitcher Jared Neyens relieved Waters in the sixth inning and retired all five batters he faced.

“Our No. 1 (Jesse Schmidt) pitcher went down two weeks ago so we’ve needed guys to step it up,” Rosenbach said. “And so far, they have all stepped up.”
