A daily look at the Seattle Mariners in spring training.

Tuesday in camp

The Mariners struck up some late-inning offense and came from behind to beat the Milwaukee Brewers 8-4 in a split-squad game in Peoria, their first victory of the exhibition season.

In Tempe, the Angels romped to an 11-5 victory, although staring pitcher Ryan Franklin pitched well despite needing 53 pitches to get through two innings. Franklin allowed three hits and two unearned runs when he was victimized by an error. Right-hander Masao Kida was hammered for seven runs on seven hits and two walks in just 12/3 innings as the Angels took a 9-0 lead in the fifth.

In Peoria against the Brewers, the Mariners scored six runs in the eighth inning to overturn a 4-2 deficit. Jose Lopez belted a three-run triple and Willie Bloomquist an RBI single off young Brewers left-hander Sam Narron, and Benji Gil hit a two-run homer off non-roster righty Alex Zumwalt.

Shin-choo Choo, who struggled in his first few games as he admittedly tried too hard to impress new manager Mike Hargrove, went 2-for-4 and drove in two runs with a sixth-inning double.

From the fans

If Mike Hargrove handed you the lineup sheet for opening day, how would you fill it out? What’s the batting order? Also, do you think Ichiro is a permanent lock at leading off? He gets on base a ton, but nobody moves him along.

Robert O Sheehan, Bothell

My opening-day batting order, against Twins right-hander Brad Radke, would be: Ichiro Suzuki, Randy Winn, Adrian Beltre, Richie Sexson, Bret Boone, Raul Ibanez, Miguel Olivo, Jeremy Reed and Pokey Reese. I could easily see Reed batting second, and Hargrove has tinkered with that in spring training.

As for moving Suzuki out of the leadoff spot, I doubt it will happen. He’s the best leadoff man in baseball and the middle of the lineup should be more productive with Adrian Beltre and Richie Sexson.
