The Game
At least the Everett Silvertips broke the “curse” of the Teddy Bear/Toque Toss. Connor Dewar made sure of that with his goal less than three minutes into the game (see video below).
“Maybe the organization will do it more often now,” the 16-year-old quipped after the game.
But that was about the only highlight as the Vancouver Giants dominated the final two periods en route to the 2-1 victory Saturday at Xfinity Arena.
It was Everett’s third Teddy Bear Toss game in the last eight days (including road games at Tri-City and Vancouver). In each case the team that was holding the event lost. In fact, U.S. Division teams are 0-4 this season when playing host to the toss.
“One could argue that you could lose the momentum of your goal when you have that, but what are you going to do?” Everett head coach Kevin Constantine said. “It’s an event that a lot of teams have. It’s a tradition and it happens in the league all year. To me it’s a non-factor.”
Both teams scored on power plays and both goaltenders played quite well as they combined for 51 saves on 54 opportunities.
Vancouver is certainly a better team than its record would indicate. The Giants have played the Tips tough in each of the four matchups this season and will likely give Everett another tussle when the two teams face off again next Sunday in Vancouver.
The Turning Point
Projected first round NHL draft pick Tyler Benson scored the game-winner at 13:46 in the third to give the Giants the victory.
Three Stars
1. Vancouver RW Chase Lang: The forward had a goal and an assist and finished plus-one on the evening.
2. Everett G Carter Hart: The 17-year-old had 25 saves in the losing effort.
3. Vancouver LW Tyler Benson: The forward had the game-winner and an assist with a plus-one showing.
