UW experience not what Trew envisioned

SEATTLE – Three coaching regimes and limited playing time weren’t what Kyle Trew had in mind for a college experience when he graduated from Edmonds-Woodway High School.

When the star running back was recruited by Rick Neuheisel’s staff, he figured, like most incoming recruits, that he could be a big part of Husky football. Instead, the fifth-year senior has played sparingly in just 14 games.

Even so, Trew is approaching his final season with a positive attitude.

“It hasn’t been what I thought it would, but overall, the experience has been great,” he said. “I’ve learned a lot. Going through three different coaches, it’s been a big character builder. There have probably been some things that I might like to change, but every experience that I’ve had here has made me a better person, made me stronger.”

Those things he might like to change?

“When a new coach comes or someone leaves, I know I lost my focus a little bit my second and third year,” he said. “If I had been able to keep my focus it would have been better for me.”

Now Trew’s focus in on enjoying his final year as a Husky.

“It’s my last year,” said Trew, who expects to earn his economics degree this winter. “I’m just trying to have a good time, do what the coaches say and hope that gets me on the field.”

@5. Sports notes lead:Sorting it all out: With the first game of the season rapidly approaching, coaches are hoping this week helps sort out everyone’s roles.

@5. Sports notes:”The number one thing is that you’re trying to get closer to establishing positions,” said Tyrone Willingham.

“That’s the number one with this week. You’d like to get closer to that. We may in some positions be at that point, other positions it may take longer. We may go into next week or even the night before the game before you say who starts.”

Among the starting positions that still seem unsettled are left tackle, right guard, kicker, punter, kick and punt returners, tight end, and one of the cornerback spots.

@5. Sports notes lead:Savannah update: Willingham is still being vague regarding the possible eligibility issues facing linebacker E.J. Savannah. Willingham did say on Tuesday that the situation, whatever it may be, was not “as problematic as it was.” He also added that there was nothing definite yet on the situation.

Dead legs: Today is the last day of two-a-day practices for the Huskies, and Willingham hopes that will show in his players’ performance.

@5. Sports notes:”I think we’re still running through that phase of heavy legs and all the stuff that comes with camp,” he said. “Hopefully it will start to come out this weekend. The last two-a-day is [today] and it will start to come around over the course of the weekend.”
