UW vs. Ohio State kickoff is minutes away

Had a chance to wander around the south parking lot a little while ago to check out the pre-game festivities. The tailgaters were out in full force and looked to be having a great time. Like last week, there are a lot of fans from the opposing team here. The west end of the stadium is filling up with red, and there might be as many Buckeye fans as there were Boise State fans last week.

For an out of town perspective, here’s the Columbus Dispatch’s coverage for today. And here is today’s coverage from the Cleveland Plain Dealer. And if you’re not caught up, here’s our coverage from the last few days.

As for today’s game, I think the Huskies have a legitimate shot at pulling off an upset (I better, since I picked a 24-20 UW win in Friday’s paper).

This game, like any early season match up, is hard to figure because we don’t know how good the teams really are. Would it shock me if OSU came out and proved to be too physically superior for the Huskies? No. But would it shock me if unproven Ohio State quarterback Todd Boekcman gets rattled in his first game, turns the ball over a couple of times, and the Huskies take control? Not really. Ultimately, I think the OSU defense is going to make it difficult for Jake Locker and company to sustain many long drives, so the Huskies best chance to win might hinge on a couple of big plays from the offense and a couple of takeaways by the defense.

Finally, it’s band day today, so the track is full of high school bands. If nothing else this should add to an already festive atmosphere at Husky Stadium (and it will provide a nice little boost to the attendance).

It’s almost time for kickoff. Should be a fun one.
